Collectively as set to represent the eternal cycle of life and the path to spiritual enlightenment and death.

As per Hindu mythology, these four Dhams hold great significance and have stories connected with the Gods. It is also believed that by undertaking this pilgrimage one can attain Moksha from the cycle of birth and death. Each Dham has its unique tale and spiritual significance according to the Hindu religion.

1st Dham - Yamnotri: (Dedicated to Yamuna Devi)

Char Dham Yatra starts with Yamunotri where the Goddess Yamuna is worshipped, which is considered a holy mother figure by the Hindu devotees. It is believed that by visiting Yamunotri Temple, offering prayers at the feet of goddess Yamuna, and taking a holy dip in river Yamuna, we will be able to get rid of all our sins and attend moksha from the fear of death. As for the tradition of the temple, the prasadam is cooked from the water of adjoining hot springs. These fuming hot springs can easily cook rice, pulses and even boil vegetables. This food is offered as prasadam to the devotees and is considered to be very holy.

As per Hindu mythology, Yamuna Devi is Surya Dev's daughter, her mother is Saranyu Devi and her brother is Yama, “ The God of Death”. So, according to the mythology, Yamuna Devi holds a great religious significance to Hindus and devotees believe that by worshipping Yamuna Devi they can also please and get blessings from Surya Dev, Yama, and Sughna Devi.

2nd Dham - Gangotri: (Dedicated to Ganga Maa)

The next destination of the Char Dham Yatra is Gangotri which is associated with the Goddess Ganga. Gangotri is a town in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. According to Hindu mythology, Gangotri is the place of origin of the river Ganga, which is considered to be the most sacred and pious in the Hindu religion.

According to Hindu mythology, after King Bhagirath performed rigorous prayers, for bringing the sacred river Ganga down from heaven to clean the sins of his ancestors, Lord Shiva released the mighty river from his locks and blessed us with the Ganga river. It is believed that by taking a dip in the holy waters of the Ganga river you will be free from all your sins. The holy water is also used for performing Puja rituals.

At first, the Gangotri temple was constructed by General Amar Singh Thapa - a Gurkha General in the 18th century. It was built close to the holy stone where Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva. According to another story, Pandavas performed a special ritual at this place to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for killing their cousins in the great war of Mahabharata. The temple is a beautiful structure made up of white granite, standing at a height of 20 feet. To avoid Pandavas, Lord Shiva disguised himself as a bull. The Pandavas, later on, discovered Lord Shiva’s transformation into a bull and then constructed the Kedarnath temple at that spot. The present-day Kedarnath temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. The place is also considered to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Pilgrims visit Kedarnath Dham to see the blessings of Lord Shiva and to attain spiritual enlightenment. As per Hindu beliefs, by visiting Kedarnath, you can attain moksha from the circle of life and death.

According to mythology Lord Vishnu resides in Badrinath Dham, and once as he was meditating and didn't notice the changing weather conditions, Goddess Lakshmi transformed herself into a Badri tree to protect Lord Vishnu from the chilling weather and provided him shade.

There is another story about Badrinath involving the Pandavas, who were heroes from the Mahabharata. It is said that the Pandavas climbed a mountain peak called Swargarohini, which means "Ascent to Heaven," and one by one, they reached the end of their human lives.

According to the Vamana Purana, two sons of Dharam, named Nar and Narayan, performed intense penance in the region where the Badrinath temple is located. These names are now given to two mountain ranges in the area. Their penance was for the well-being of all living beings in the universe.

The Skanda Purana describes Badrinath as the most sacred shrine among all the temples on Earth, in heaven, and even in hell. The Padma Purana considers Badrinath to be a holy place with abundant treasures. There are many stories associated with the Badrinath temple, which has been passed down through the ages. Visiting Badrinath and taking a holy dip in the Alaknanda River is believed to purify one’s soul.
