The second largest district of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Sonbhadra is located in the eastern part of the state. The geographical specialty of the district is that it is the only district in India that borders four states – Bihar in the east, Jharkhand in south southeast, Chhattisgarh in the south, and Madhya Pradesh in the west.

The district of Sonbhadra is a tourist hub for the eastern region of the state called Purvanchal. The district headquarters of Sonbhadra is Robertsganj which is located on the southeastern edge of the state. Sonbhadra has ecological, historical, and cultural connections with the Baghelkhand region which it shares with its neighboring states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

History and Rulers

The history of the district is also very vast. It was ruled by many rulers like Bramhadatts, Kushans, Nagas, Guptas, and Mughals. The forts in Sonbhadra have the architectures of different rulers of that time. The famous Vijaygarh Fort, one of the oldest forts of Sonbhadra, was built by local Kol rulers and the fort finds a great mention in a Hindi epic Chandrakanta written by Devaki Nandan Khatri, which also became a famous Hindi TV series produced by Nirja Guleri featuring some of the famous Bollywood actors like Irrfan Khan.

Sonbhadra holds a prominent place in India because of its industrial contribution. The district has huge deposits of bauxite, limestone, coal, and gold. It also has many power plants that cater to the state’s electricity needs to a great extent.
