In ancient times, a demon Hiranykashyap worshiped Brahma and asked for a boon that any animal, bird, lord demon, or human will not be able to kill him.
He may not die in the night or day, nor on the ground or in the sky. Not inside the house, not outside. Even he cannot be killed by a weapon. When Hiranykashyap got this boon from Lord Brahma then he started considering himself as God.
He wanted all the people in the world to worship him just like Lord Vishnu. His son Prahlad denied his condition to worship him instead of lord Vishnu. Prahlad was a reverend of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu had his grace and blessings on Parhlad. When his father Hiranykashyap warned of worshiping lord Vishnu and he denied his words he kept Prahlad in bondage and started torturing him. On the next day, we color each other and enjoy the delicious foods.

As Holika went to sit in the fire and the fire lit then by the grace of Lord Vishnu that cloth covered Prahlad instead of Holika and in this plan, Holika was burned and died. Prahlad was saved.
This is the reason that Holi is celebrated as the victory of good over bad. And on the day of Holi, a sacred fire is lit and all the bones of humans are burnt in this sacred fire. This is the story behind Holika Dahan.
