Somnath means Lord of the Moon. According to tradition, Soma, the Moon God, worshipped Shiva at Prabhas to lift a curse from his father in law Daksha. The first temple stood in gold. Accounts say Ravana later raised one in silver and Krishna one in sandalwood. Many traditions add a stone temple under King Bhimdev. Those are legends rather than documented history.

By Road
