    Maharashtra

    In Maharashtra, everyone comes together on the day of Makar Sankranti and gives each other ‘til-gul’ (a sweet made from sesame seeds and jaggery).     In Gujarat, this day is known as ‘Uttarayan’. As a matter of fact, Sankranti is celebrated for two days in Gujarat, the first-day being ‘Uttarayan’ and the second day being called ‘Vasi-Uttarayan’.     Andhra Pradesh

    In Andhra Pradesh, the festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated for four days as follows:

    • Day One – This day is called Bhogi Panduga, in which people lit all their unnecessary and old belongings in a bonfire.
    • Day Two – This day is called Pedda Panduga and is celebrated by wearing new clothes, praying to the Almighty, and inviting friends and families for relishing food. On this day, women are seen decorating the lobby of their houses with beautiful, colorful patterns, surrounded by flowers and gobbemma.
    • Day Three – This day is called Kanuma and is dedicated to the farmers of Andhra Pradesh. As the cattle are considered to be the most important factor of farmers living, the cattle are worshipped on this day.
    • Day Four – This day is called Mukkanuma, in which the farmers offer their prayers to rain and soil and ask for strength for the harvest season. On this day, meat varieties are prepared in households as a matter of sacrifice.

    Punjab

    In Punjab, all the Punjabis wear bright-colored clothes and dance around a bonfire to celebrate Lohri. Women perform a traditional dance called Giddha and men perform Bhangra, which is another traditional dance of Punjab. Punjab’s major economic structure is through agriculture, thus the next day of Lohri is considered to be the first day of the financial year for the farmers.     In Karnataka, Sankranti is called ‘Ellu Birodhu’.     Kerala

    In Kerala, during Makar Sankranti, scores of people gather to witness the ‘Makara Vilakku’ (the flame on Ponnambaladeu hill) which is situated close to the Sabrimala temple, and witnesses the celestial star in the skies.
