Sabarimala Kaise Pahunchein Train Se

Rail is the cheapest way in for pilgrims from outside Kerala. No line goes up the hill, so every Sabarimala train route ends at a Kerala station and continues by road. Chengannur to Pamba elevated rail line is still under discussion, so plan on a bus or taxi this season.

Nearest Railway Station to Sabarimala

Chengannur is the main railhead. Indian Railways named it the Gateway of Sabarimala in 2009, and it’s 90 km from Pamba via Ranni. Thiruvalla and Kottayam are the other two stations pilgrims use.

Kottayam aur Thiruvalla se Pamba Route

From Kottayam, the road goes through Ponkunnam and Erumeli, and many pilgrims stop at Erumeli for Petta Thullal and a visit to Vavar Palli. Thiruvalla works well if your train stops there. Some trains go via Alappuzha and skip Kottayam, and Kerala Tourism suggests getting down at Kayamkulam, 125 km from Pamba via Adoor.

You fly into Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, then go by road. Both airports have direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Nearest Airport to Sabarimala Temple

Our pick for most pilgrims is Kochi. It’s closer, it gets more flights, and the Erumeli road passes Vavar Palli on the way. Thiruvananthapuram makes more sense for pilgrims from southern Tamil Nadu.

KSRTC Bus to Sabarimala

KSRTC bus to Sabarimala is the cheapest road option. Pathanamthitta depot works as the 24-hour hub in season, and buses from Chengannur and Adoor pass through it on the Vadasserikkara road.

• KSRTC’s published charter fares to Pamba are ₹9,500 from Chengannur and ₹10,000 from Kottayam via Erumeli.
• Lockers and freshen-up rooms are ready for bus pilgrims at Pamba depot.

A cab makes the most sense for families, elderly pilgrims and groups carrying Irumudi bundles, because it waits for you at Nilakkal. Ghat Road aur Travel Time

Sabarimala road conditions change after Erumeli and Vadasserikkara. The road narrows, and Laha and Elavunkal are known accident spots. Our drivers hold heavy vehicles in low gear on the descent and stop at Laha for 15 minutes to cool the brakes. If you don’t know this road, we’d avoid self-driving it at night.

Nilakkal parking takes FASTag only, so we suggest a top-up before Vadasserikkara. Last season, cars paid ₹30 and mini buses ₹75 per 24 hours.

Nilakkal to Pamba Bus Service

Sabarimala mandir tak gaadi nahi jaati. Large vehicles stop at Nilakkal, and pilgrims reach Pamba on the KSRTC chain service, the only buses allowed on this 18 km road in season.

• Buses leave every 2 to 5 minutes, day and night.
• One-way fare in recent seasons was ₹50 non-AC and ₹80 AC.
• Tickets are sold at Nilakkal counters and online.

We suggest buying the return ticket at Nilakkal itself. After the temple closes at 1 PM, the exit queue at Pamba bus stand gets long. Vehicles up to 12 seats could drop pilgrims at Pamba last season, but this rule changes with crowd levels, so check the 2026-27 police notice.

Pamba to Sannidhanam Distance and Trek Guide

Pamba se Sabarimala mandir 5 km siddhi chadhai hai. Most take a dip in the cold Pamba river first, pray at the Pamba Ganapathi temple, and then start up with the Irumudi balanced on their head.

Trek Time, Difficulty aur Doli Service

The Sabarimala hill trek is short but steep. Plan 2 to 4 hours, depending on your fitness and the crowd.

We recommend starting before sunrise. The stone steps are cooler, and the line at the 18 steps is shorter.

Erumeli aur Pulmedu ke Traditional Forest Routes

The old Peruvazhi path from Erumeli is a two-day forest walk via Azhutha and Karimala to Pamba. Forest rules stop pilgrims from going beyond Azhutha after sundown. The second route starts at Sathram near Vandiperiyar and enters Sannidhanam over Pulmedu. This season, TDB has set aside 3,000 Virtual-Q slots a day for each route, against 60,000 for Nilakkal-Pamba.

Sabarimala Route from Major Indian Cities

Pilgrims from other states mainly choose between a train to Chengannur or Kottayam and a flight to Kochi. The Railway Ministry has also announced extra Sabarimala special trains from North India this season.

Virtual Queue Booking and Pilgrimage Rules

Sabarimala pilgrimage rules start with the Virtual-Q pass. TDB has said spot booking will be very limited this season.

• Booking for 2026-27 opens at 10 AM on 29 October 2026 on sabarimalaonline.org, and it’s free.
• TDB has capped darshan at 80,000 pilgrims a day, spot booking included.
• Every adult needs an original Aadhaar, voter ID or passport matching the booking.
• Plastic is banned at Nilakkal, Pamba and Sannidhanam.

Plan your arrival at Pamba within the printed time slot. In November 2025, the Kerala High Court told police to follow the slot, and pilgrims with a mismatched date were sent back. Entry rules for women aged 10 to 50 follow the current TDB notice, so check it before booking.

Travel Tips for First-Time Sabarimala Pilgrims

Mandala season ka pehla hafta aur Mandala Pooja (27 December) se pehle ka hafta sabse zyada crowded hota hai. If your dates are flexible, we suggest the first half of December, between the two peaks. Family pilgrims with elderly parents do better with a night at Erumeli or Pathanamthitta, so they reach Nilakkal rested.

For Makaravilakku on 14 January 2027, keep your return cab for the next morning. Buses jam the Nilakkal road within minutes of the jyothi, and our drivers plan that exit for the following day.
