Kanaka Durga Temple stands on Indrakeeladri hill, above the Krishna River in Vijayawada. Locals call it Kanaka Durgamma temple or Durga Gudi, and North Indian visitors know it as the Kanak Durga Mandir. Devotees believe the goddess chose this hill herself after slaying the demon Mahishasura, and her idol here is swayambhu, or self-manifested. For Andhra Pradesh, Kanaka Durga is the guardian goddess of the state.
Families climb the hill before weddings, after a new job, with a newborn and before exams. Fridays are busy all year. Dasara in October brings lakhs of pilgrims, and red-robed Bhavani Deeksha devotees fill the steps in November and December.
It’d save you a lot of trouble to know a few things before you reach the hill. Darshan timings, ticket types, Chandi Homam booking, the dress code, the climb and the ride up are the details that decide how your day on Indrakeeladri goes. Chiku Cab picks pilgrims up at the railway station, airport and city hotels, and our drivers wait while you finish darshan.

History and Story of Vijayawada Kanaka Durgamma
Indrakeeladri takes its name from Keeladu, a sage who prayed to Goddess Durga and asked her to live on him. She agreed, he became this hill, and she later appeared here as Mahishasura Mardini. Inside the sanctum, the 4-foot idol shows Kanaka Durga Devi with eight arms, pressing a trident into the demon.
The hill carries a Mahabharata story too. Arjuna did penance here to win the Pasupatastra from Lord Shiva, and the city took the name Vijayawada after his victory, or vijaya. Adi Shankaracharya later installed the Sri Chakra at the goddess’s feet. Lord Malleswara Swamy, a form of Shiva, has his own shrine on the hilltop.
