Historical Significance of Manikarnika Ghat:
Manikarnika Ghat, where pyres have continued, from centuries.
This ghat is also known as Burning ghat. There are so many Cremation Ghats in India but this ghat has a special and supreme place over every other ghats in Hinduism.
So many mythological stories say that only this place has power to give a person salvation. It’s believed by people that if someone’s body is burned here, they will get shiva and their cycle of birth and rebirth will end.
Even the name of this place has many different stories, some say that once Maa Parvati was taking bath on this ghat and Kundal means earring drops into the water. She tried to find it but her kundal was missing.
Then she cursed the Ghat “To burn forever”, it is believed from then the ghat is burning by fire of cremation.
Another story says, when Mata Sati herself jumped in the fire of Havan Kund at her father’s house due to disrespect of Mahadev in the Yagya. Then Mahadev started roaming with holding her burned body in his arms. Then Lord Vishnu’s Sudarsan Chakra cuts her body into 51 pieces.
And wherever those pieces got fallen, later Mahadev established them as Saktipiths and it is believed that her ears fell at Manikarnika which got his name as Manikarnika, whose meaning in Sanskrit is ears or earrings.
