Holi is the festival of colors, happiness, and brotherhood.

In India, Holi is celebrated in different cities and different ways. On the first day of Holi, Holika Dahan is performed. For Holika Dahan, dried wood, sticks, grass, and cow dung are burnt and people chant traditional hymns.

There is a Puranic story behind the festival of colors. On the second day, people color each other with colors and Gulal. According to the Hindu calendar,

Holi is celebrated each year on the sacred day of Purnima in the month of Phalgun, and in 2014, the festival will be celebrated on 24 March. The Purnima will begin on the 24th of March at 09:56 Am to 12:30 P.m. on the 25th of March on Monday.

About the festival of colours: Holi

In ancient times, a demon Hiranykashyap worshiped Brahma and asked for a boon that any animal, bird, lord demon, or human will not be able to kill him.

He may not die in the night or day, nor on the ground or in the sky. Not inside the house, not outside. Even he cannot be killed by a weapon. When Hiranykashyap got this boon from Lord Brahma then he started considering himself as God.

He wanted all the people in the world to worship him just like Lord Vishnu. His son Prahlad denied his condition to worship him instead of lord Vishnu. Prahlad was a reverend of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu had his grace and blessings on Parhlad. When his father Hiranykashyap warned of worshiping lord Vishnu and he denied his words he kept Prahlad in bondage and started torturing him. Holika had a cloth and boon that if she covered herself with that cloth then fire would not harm her.

As Holika went to sit in the fire and the fire lit then by the grace of Lord Vishnu that cloth covered Prahlad instead of Holika and in this plan, Holika was burned and died. Prahlad was saved.

This is the reason that Holi is celebrated as the victory of good over bad. And on the day of Holi, a sacred fire is lit and all the bones of humans are burnt in this sacred fire. This is the story behind Holika Dahan.

2. It is a symbol of victory of good over bad. The Hindu festival of colors sends a message to society that we should burn our past wrong deeds and weaknesses and make a fresh start in life with colors of enthusiasm and belief. Holi is a very important festival in our society. This festival has been celebrated since ancient times. This festival is full of color and joy. People gather on this day and embrace each other. They forget the past problems and quarrel to spread the message of brotherhood. People burn the evil in themselves on the day of Holika Dahan and on the next day, they celebrate the joy and love in life. People forget their religion and caste on this day to celebrate the festivals. This makes the celebration of Holi a very special festival in our society.
